Hair soaks up oil spills

posted on December 17, 2010 in how to make shampoo

You shampoo because hair collects oil. That means it can collect petroleum oil spills too. Over 300,000 pounds of hair are cut each day in the US and not to mention all the clippings from pet groomers.
We hope you’ll enjoy this little film about our charity’s “Oil Spill Hair Mats Program”

Excerpt from Recipes for Disaster

posted on December 3, 2010 in shampoo recipe

Concerned about the world’s addiction to oil, and its disastrous environmental consequences for the planet, the filmmaker convinces his family to go on an “oil diet” for one year. Aiming to reduce their contribution to greenhouse gases, Webster—if not his wife and two young sons, who are very reluctant participants—is eager to learn from their experiment and becomes a man on a mission.

Divided into thirteen eponymous chapters, RECIPES FOR DISASTER chronicles their efforts on a month by month basis, revealing the personal difficulties involved in making such a radical change in lifestyle, and the surprising extent to which petroleum-based products figure in our everyday lives, including home heating and electricity, transportation, food, plastic products and packaging, clothing, even toothpaste, lipstick and shampoo.

Homemade Honey Almond Sugar Scrub

posted on August 22, 2010 in homemade scrub

INGREDIENTS:
Sugar(about 3 cps)
Almonds(no salted almonds)(about 3/4 cp)~if you can find almonds that are already ground up that would be super easy!
Honey (about 1/3 cp)
Almond Extract(about 1 1/4 tsp)
Almond Oil (about 4 fl. oz.)
food processor or coffee grinder to grind up almonds
container to store your scrub that you can put in your shower(water tight)
bowl to mix your ingrediants
spoon

Grind up almonds. Put almonds in your mixing bowl. Add honey and almond extract. Mix. Add your oil. Mix. Add your sugar till most of the oil has been soaked up by the sugar. Mix. Put in your container. Store in shower or wherever you are going to use your scrub.
Should keep for a very long time but if you notice any nasty smells or discolorations then throw it away.

The honey and almond oil will moisturize your skin and the almonds and sugar will exfoliate!!

Making Lemon Oil Infusion

posted on August 18, 2010 in shampoo recipe

~♥~ I made this Lemon/Tea oil for a shampoo recipe I created. This is the hot method of an oil infusion which is good for sturdy herbs. It’s less expensive than some essential oils and is fast. It takes about 3-4 hours. Herbs that are more delicate need to be done in the cold method. Which takes 4-6 weeks. I’m going to be doing some Calendula Oil once my herbs arrive so i’ll do a video of that as well. Store your homemade oils in a dark bottle(if possible) in a dark area. So they last :0) .~♥~

Apple cider vinegar will balance hair’s pH level, add shine, and remove build-up from your hair. The baking soda cleanses the hair, also removing buildup. The coconut oil acts as a conditioner. If your coconut oil is hard, put it in hot water to melt it first.
