Homemade Olive Oil Conditioner

posted on May 29, 2010 in homemade conditioner

This is the recipe for the Olive Oil conditioner that I talked about in the “Wash Your Locs” video. It can be used as a regular after shampoo conditioner, leave-in conditioner, or hair spritz.
blog: http://www.loveyourlocs.com

Note: I am not a cosmetologist or a chemist. This recipe is what works for me, but I can’t guarantee it will be great for everyone.

The recipe is:
1/4 cup of olive oil
1/4 cup aloe vera gel (dietary kind)
2 tbsp of vegetable glycerine
1 tbsp of honey
Essential Oils

Please make changes to it to suit your needs. If you do, comment and let us know what you did!

@knp512 Have you tried using it as an all-over spritz instead of applying directly to your scalp? I use it as both leave-in after washing and as a daily spritz and my hair has never been kinder to me! It also helps prevent breakage and the PH on your recipe is excellent… I will be happy to share any other homemade recipes or alternatives to this one… please do the same, if you don’t mind. Your recipe has truly been a blessing and it ended my product junkie phase.

@Runnergal: You know, I never thought of the Tea Tree acting as a preservative. That is probably why mine lasts so long!
I agree that it is a great leave-in. My scalp just doesn’t like oil. So when I rinse it out, the little bit of oil that remains is perfect for me. But when my hair is REALLY dry, I just leave it in!
Thank you so much for your comments! If you think of any other ingredients that would be great in this, PLEASE share!!!!

  5. @knp512 I just …
@knp512 I just realized that you add Tea Tree Oil as one of your essential oils… I didn’t the first time… Tea Tree Oil is a natural preservative.. so that’s probably another reason why yours hasn’t molded… this time I added Vitamin E Oil in place of the glycerine to help preserve it as well.. I’m just being extra careful :)

BTW- I love it as a leave-in… it’s interesting how you rinse yours out… I’ll try it that way as well just out of curiousity…thank you again. This was so helpful

@Runnergal: I have never had that problem myself. I keep the aloe in the fridge but when I mix it up I keep it in the shower. But, I use it everyday so it doesn’t stay in there long.

Hello, thank you so much for this recipe… my hair loves it. Would you be so kind to update in the notes section of your video that it should be refrigerated afterwards in order to preserve it? I learned the hard way… the aloe vera gel molded after a week when I kept it in my shower stall…had to throw out the entire batch and just made a new one. Definitely keeping it in the fridge for now on! thanks so much!

Hi this is a great vid , the ingrediants are all so wholesom and thanks for sharing this with us. I was also wondering if its safe to use a glycerine/water mix on my locs everyday as a spritz to soften? I have never used glycerine before but hear good things about the vegetable variety.

@zing55 I have a video for an Herbal Tea shampoo recipe. I have actually started using it without the herbal tea lately but I still use the sweet almond oil and vegetable glycerine. You can also play around with the amount of castille soap that you use to suit your liking.
