The Art & Science of Homemade Shampoo

Homemade shampooHomemade shampoo is not as easy as it sounds. Many a budding shampoo maker is put off when their first few attempts go awry. However learning to make shampoo is a black art that is definitely worth it in the long run. So here are some pointers to get you well on your way to becoming a master of the homemade shampoo and an connoisseur of the homemade conditioner.

When you start out, you should treat your first few concoctions as tests. In other words you shouldn’t get down when your shampoo doesn’t turn out the way you expected; it’s just a test result. As the old saying goes, “The man who makes no mistakes makes nothing”. Don’t expect every shampoo recipe to have spectacular results. There are many variables such as your type of hair, the condition of your scalp, and the quality of the ingredients. For example, people learning how to make shampoo frequently complain that causing them to have dandruff. Rather than see this as a failure, you should write down the exact recipe and make a note of the effects it had.

Next you should ask questions online to help guide you. A great place to learn is the Yahoo! Answers site. The chances are that your exact question has already been answered, but if not you can pose the question for a rapid barrage of responses. I just looked up for the example of dandruff and got the following tip: – “It may help you to use rosemary or tea tree. Maybe even an organic scalp massage oil.” It’s very much a process of trial and error, which is a good thing. Being able to master the art is an adventure into the unknown, and should not be feared but treated as an exciting journey!! It’s much more fun that way and in my experience the best homemade shampoo results come from people who enjoy the process.

Does anyone know of a hair growing recipe?

posted on September 2, 2010 in shampoo recipe

School is going to be starting in 2 months and I was wanting my hair to be longer by then. Does anyone know of a recipe,shampoo/conditioner,or book I can use to make my hair grow faster and longer? Please don’t say hair extensions, wait until it grows on its own, there isn’t anything, or anything like that. Please help.

Hair products don’t do that for your hair. Shampoos & conditioners are just ‘window’ treatment, and are meant to clean and condition processed hair.

It may grow very slowly or none at all if you’ve straightened your hair in the past.

Foods for Healthy Hair – the website had moved.

http://health.yahoo.com/experts/healthie…

Fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains all supply B-complex vitamins, like biotin, folic acid and vitamin B12, as well as vitamin A, copper and zinc, which are all necessary for remedying dry, brittle hair and nourishing a healthy scalp. Some prime examples of foods that contain these nutrients for healthy hair include:
·                     Folic Acid – asparagus, beets, broccoli, avocados, Brussels sprouts, beans, chickpeas, soybeans, lentils, oranges, fresh peas, turkey and spinach.
·                     Biotin – cauliflower, liver, salmon, carrots, bananas, cereals, yeast, and soy flour. Keep in mind that biotin content is reduced when food is cooked or preserved.
·                     Vitamin B12 – foods rich in vitamin B12 include animal protein (such as beef, lamb, and veal), clams and oysters, liver, fish, milk, and egg yolks.
•Vitamin A – butter, egg yolks, fish, fortified milk, organ meats (such as liver), and dark green, orange, red, and yellow fruits and vegetables, which all contain beta-carotene.
•Copper – oysters and other shellfish, whole grains, beans, nuts, potatoes, and organ meats are good sources of copper. Dark leafy greens, dried fruits such as prunes, cocoa, black pepper, and yeast are also sources of copper in the diet.
•Zinc – beef, eggs, liver, pork, poultry, and oysters. Also is also abundant in other high-protein foods, like cheese, legumes and nuts.
If having a lush, beautiful mane of healthy hair is important to you, don’t just look to hot oil treatments and shine emollients. Eat these foods for healthy hair and say “bye-bye” to bad hair days.

need a shikakai shampoo recipe?

posted on August 30, 2010 in shampoo recipe

Buy some shikakai powder from the market. Powder some green grams and fenugreek (methi) seeds. Mix two portions of shikakai powder, one portion of green gram flour and half portion of Fenugreek powder and keep it. When required, mix a tablespoon of this mixture in the white of an egg and use it as a shampoo. It does not lather like a soap, or shampoo, but cleanses the hair.

Do you know an easy recipe for home made shampoo?

posted on August 28, 2010 in shampoo recipe

1/4 cup grated soap (castile soap is a common choice)
1/4 cup hot water
1/2 tsp olive oil
2 tablespoons glycerine
~5 drops essential oil (optional, for fragrance or therapeutic properties)
Let’s Make Shampoo!
Dissolve the soap in the hot water.

Stir in the olive oil. You can substitute another vegetable oil if you like, but olive oil is generally accepted as healthy for skin and hair.

Add the glycerine and any essential oils you might want. Typical essential oils would include lavender, peppermint, or citrus.
You can use this shampoo as-is or as a base for specialized recipes for oily hair, dry hair, dandruff, etc.

favorite product for my natural hair :wash and go results

posted on August 22, 2010 in shampoo recipe

my new favorite products are actually just a shampoo and conditioner.

Paul mitchell instant moisture shampoo: for me it helps with definition, adds shine/reveals natural shine. i do not detangle with shampoo ever!! that’s a recipe for disaster. i use it only to cleanse my hair and scalp and save any detangling for the conditioner.

Rusk sensories calm conditioner: for me it defines, elongates/less shrinkage when used with comb then finger combed through (if i use a denman type brush then i have more shrinkage) , adds/reveals natural shine/sheen.

no other product added

thanks for watching!

How I Wash My Makeup Brushes

posted on August 18, 2010 in shampoo recipe

Just a quick video on how I wash my makeup brushes.

What I use:
Loreal Kids Extra Gentle 2 in 1 Shampoo
or Homemade Brush Cleanser (link below to the video I used to make mine)
Makeup brushes (of course!)
Wash cloth or any other towel
Water! :D lol

-If you don’t have a brush cleanser, I would definitely suggest using a baby shampoo, just do NOT use a hand soap, it doesn’t work nearly as well! The shampoo I’m using is a baby shampoo that is 2 in 1, meaning it has conditioner in it as well, so that’s why I use this shampoo, because it at least has a conditioner in it as well. :D

Recipe from EnkoreMakeup for his homemade brush cleanser:
-Bowl
-Something to stir with
-1 cup distilled or purified water
-1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
-1/2 tablespoon dish soap
-1/2 tablespoon baby shampoo
-1 tablespoon leave-in conditioner (spray-on kind)
-Stir gently all together to mix and blend
-Pour the mixture into an empty bottle

(I do not take credit for this recipe whatsoever, the entire thing is credited to him.)
